Israel intercepts missile fired from Yemen, Houthis claim responsibility

Israel’s military intercepted a missile fired from Yemen on Friday, one day after shooting down two projectiles launched by Houthi militants. The Iranian-aligned group claimed responsibility for the attack, which they say was aimed at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.

According to Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesperson, the attack is their third in 48 hours and poses a threat to air travel at the airport. However, the airport’s website appeared normal, with scheduled flights still listed.

The Houthis have pledged to escalate attacks on Israel following US strikes earlier this month that killed at least 50 people. These attacks are part of a wider campaign to expand their range of targets in Israel and retaliate against Israeli strikes in Gaza.

The Houthis, along with other anti-Israel militias such as Hamas and Hezbollah, are part of the “Axis of Resistance” alliance backed by Iran. The group has carried out over 100 attacks on shipping since Israel’s war with Hamas began in late 2023, disrupting global commerce and prompting a costly US military campaign to intercept missiles.
