Israeli troops killed 15 Palestinian medics and emergency responders, including eight Red Crescent workers, six Civil Defense members, and one UNRWA staffer. The medics were buried in a mass grave in southern Gaza after Israeli military bulldozers allegedly plowed over their bodies.
The Palestinian Red Crescent says the slain workers were clearly marked as medical personnel and accused Israeli troops of killing them “in cold blood.” The Israeli military claims its troops opened fire on vehicles approaching them “suspiciously” without identification.
Since the war in Gaza began 18 months ago, Israel has killed over 100 Civil Defense workers and over 1,000 health workers. The International Red Cross/Red Crescent said it was the deadliest attack on its personnel in eight years.
The UN has demanded “justice and answers” for the Israeli killings of emergency responders. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher stated that the medics were killed while trying to save lives.
Funerals were held for the slain workers, with mourners saying they were killed in cold blood despite their humanitarian mission. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has condemned the attack, calling on all humanitarians to be protected.
