A pregnant Palestinian woman, Sundus Shalabi, was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Sunday. The 23-year-old mother-to-be was shot alongside her critically injured husband, Yazan Abu Shola, in their car. The unborn child also died due to lack of medical attention caused by Israel’s restrictions on transferring patients to hospitals.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that medical teams were unable to save the baby’s life. The Israeli military is calling the incident a “crime of execution” and targeting of defenseless civilians.
Contrastingly, three Israeli hostages released by Hamas received extensive media coverage over the weekend, including multiple stories in major newspapers and broadcasts. However, the killing of Sundus Shalabi has yet to be mentioned on prominent Western news websites, sparking concerns about the value placed on Palestinian lives during the fragile ceasefire.
