Israel launched air attacks on Wednesday in Syria’s capital Damascus and central province of Hama, targeting military capabilities and infrastructure sites. The Israeli military confirmed striking “military capabilities” at Syrian military bases in Hama city and the T4 military airport in Homs.
The attacks follow hundreds of previous strikes by Israel since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2021. Syria’s Observatory for Human Rights reported over 500 air attacks between December 8, 2021, and December 31, 2022, targeting a scientific research centre in Barzeh, which Israel claimed was used to develop guided missiles and chemical weapons.
The Syrian government accuses Israel of waging a campaign against the country’s stability. Western countries, including the US, have previously attacked Syria’s Ministry of Defence facility, citing its relation to “chemical weapons infrastructure”.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called Israeli strikes on Syria “unnecessary”, saying they worsen the situation. The conflict in Syria remains ongoing, with Israel continuing to carry out air attacks and deploy troops to a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the occupied Golan Heights.
