Israel has launched airstrikes against targets belonging to the Houthi militia in Yemen’s western coast and inland regions, killing nine people, according to reports. The strikes came hours after Israeli warplanes intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, which was allegedly aimed at Israel.
The Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea for over a year, claiming it is in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, who are also under bombardment by Israel. The militia’s actions have disrupted global shipping and strained regional relations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that any harm to Israel would come with “a very heavy price,” suggesting potential further action against Iran-backed groups. Iran has condemned the strike as a blatant violation of international law.
Analysts say it’s challenging for Israel to replicate its success in Gaza and Lebanon, given the Houthis’ control over territory and patronage from Iran. The militia may continue to launch strikes to bolster legitimacy, making it hard for Israel to pressure them into change.
