Israel Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against Houthis in Yemen

Israel has launched air strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, following a reported use of cluster bombs by the group on Friday. The Israeli operation targeted a military complex housing the presidential palace, fuel depot, and power stations, resulting in six deaths and 86 injuries.

The Houthis’ use of cluster munitions, banned by over 100 countries, was confirmed after an Israeli missile carrying the munitions failed to be intercepted. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu overseen the retaliatory operation, stating “Anyone who attacks us – we attack them.”

Cluster munitions are designed to disperse tiny bomblets in mid-air that can remain dormant until triggered by footsteps or movement. The IDF is investigating why the missile carrying the munitions was not intercepted before it dispersed.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023, while the Houthis have been launching missiles at Israel and attacking commercial ships since then. Backed by Iran, the rebels claim to be fighting in solidarity with Palestinians.
