Israel Plans to Double Population on Occupied Golan Heights Despite Syrian Threats

Israel has agreed to double its population on the occupied Golan Heights, citing security threats from Syria. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that strengthening the region is crucial for Israel’s state and security.

The Golan Heights were captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981. Despite international condemnation, including from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, Israel claims it needs to secure its border due to increased threats from Syria.

Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that the developments in Syria have heightened the threat to Israel, despite the moderate image of rebel leaders. Netanyahu also spoke with US President Donald Trump about security concerns in Syria.

To encourage demographic growth, Israel is allocating over $11 million for a plan to attract more settlers. However, Syria’s de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa has warned that Israel’s actions are being used as false pretexts to justify its attacks on Syria. Sharaa emphasizes the need for diplomatic solutions and stability, rather than military adventures.

The Golan Heights are home to 24,000 Druze, an Arab minority who practice an offshoot of Islam, and many work in farming and tourism. The region’s strategic importance is a major concern for Israel, with its forces occupying a demilitarised zone inside Syria since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
