Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered negotiations for the release of all hostages and an end to the war in Gaza “on terms acceptable to Israel.” The Israeli military still plans to advance its control over Gaza City, despite this.
Netanyahu’s comments came before a high-level security meeting with defense chiefs and cabinet ministers focused on approving operational plans to take Gaza City and defeat Hamas. The spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said the military is already near Gaza City and local residents reported heavy shelling throughout the night.
Netanyahu emphasized that defeating Hamas and securing hostage releases go hand-in-hand, highlighting a critical juncture in the situation. This marks the first public address on ceasefire talks by Netanyahu since Hamas responded positively to a proposal from mediators Qatar and Egypt.
However, Netanyahu didn’t specify who he instructed to start negotiations or clarify the current proposal framework, which includes a 60-day ceasefire with half of the remaining Israeli hostages being released.
Israeli officials believe there are around 50 hostages left in Gaza, with at least 20 thought to be alive. Netanyahu has emphasized seeking comprehensive agreements for hostage releases and meeting Israel’s conditions for ending the war.
Despite plans for a massive assault on Gaza City, concern from residents remains high, who described Israel’s actions as starting a new war. The humanitarian situation in the city is dire, with famine confirmed in the Gaza Governorate.
Deathly strikes continue daily. At least 18 Palestinians, including several children, were killed in Israeli strikes against a school in Gaza City on Friday morning. The Omar Ibn Al-A’as school, used as a shelter for displaced people, was targeted by artillery fire.
Israel has called up tens of thousands to take part in the impending military operation. Netanyahu approved plans to take control of Gaza City and defeat Hamas, highlighting his critical stance but avoiding public reference to mediators’ proposals, leaving room for partial agreements.
