Dozens of Palestinians released from Israeli jails show signs of torture and starvation, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society. As part of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, 183 Palestinians were released on Saturday, emerging with visible physical damage.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society reported that many prisoners showed signs of years-long detention, including torture, starvation, and medical neglect. Some exhibited severe injuries, such as rib fractures, while others had been subjected to beatings and scabies infestations.
Hamas condemned the treatment of its prisoners, calling it “heinous” and a reflection of the occupation’s commitment to violence against Palestinian detainees. The group’s armed wing provided healthcare to Israeli captives despite dire conditions in Gaza.
One released Palestinian described his experience as “inhumane,” saying he was subjected to brutal torture for 15 months. Red Cross staff expressed outrage over the handling of released prisoners, citing instances of handcuffing and being forced to endure physical abuse.
Under the ceasefire deal, hundreds of Palestinians will be freed in exchange for dozens held by Hamas in Gaza. One Palestinian prisoner, Hussam Shahin, was transferred to hospital after undergoing surgery without anesthesia while in jail.
