Israel Steps Up Airstrikes on Syrian Advanced Weaponry

Israel plans to intensify airstrikes on Syrian stores of advanced weaponry, with the aim of preventing rebel groups from seizing these systems. This move comes as Israel is concerned about extremist groups gaining access to Syria’s chemical arsenal.

Israeli officials claim a “limited” troop presence on the ground in Syria, but the presence is still a concern for some. The military has already cleared landmines and established barriers along its border with Syria.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will take all necessary actions to ensure its security in light of President Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow. Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the goal is to destroy heavy strategic weapons, including surface-to-air missiles and cruise missiles.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar added that the main concern is preventing these advanced systems from falling into extremist hands, rather than interfering with internal Syrian affairs. Airstrikes will persist in the coming days, according to a senior Israeli official.
