Israel’s military launched a series of airstrikes on Monday in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 60 people across the territory, according to Palestinian health authorities. The strikes came ahead of talks between Israeli officials and US President Donald Trump’s administration on a potential ceasefire.
Israeli tanks pushed into the eastern areas of Zeitoun suburb in Gaza City, shelling several areas in the north, while aircraft bombed at least four schools after ordering hundreds of families to leave, residents said. An Israeli airstrike also killed 22 people, including women and children, at a beachfront cafe in Gaza City.
Health authorities reported that at least 58 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Monday, with most of the deaths occurring in the northern Gaza Strip. Residents described the bombardment as intense, saying it felt like “earthquakes.”
The Israeli military said it struck militant targets in northern Gaza, including command and control centers, after taking steps to mitigate civilian casualties.
As part of its talks with the US, Israel’s strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer will discuss a potential ceasefire and his country’s position on releasing hostages. Hamas officials say that progress depends on Israel changing its stance and agreeing to end the war.
The US has proposed a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the remains of other Palestinians. The proposal includes the release of half the hostages held by Hamas, with the remaining hostages released as part of a deal guaranteeing an end to the conflict.
