Israel Strikes Gaza School, Kills at Least 20 Palestinians

At least 20 Palestinians were killed and scores wounded on Saturday in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip. Eight Palestinians, including two children and two women, lost their lives, while 30 others, including 19 children, were injured in an Israeli bombing on a school housing displaced people in Jabalia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized a delegation to leave for Doha to continue negotiations with Hamas over the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. However, many displaced families in Gaza face significant challenges, including driving rain, strong winds, and sinking temperatures.

Winter is proving particularly harsh for those living in makeshift shelters. Over one million people are now living in tents or other temporary homes due to Israel’s ongoing military assault on Gaza. A recent appeal from the United Nations and Lebanon has been extended to raise $371 million in aid for civilians impacted by the conflict and humanitarian emergency.

Separately, UN humanitarians have continued to distribute food assistance to people in Syria. Over 2.5 million Syrians received bread between late November and early January, with a Qatari Air Force plane delivering 23 tons of humanitarian aid to Damascus last week as part of Qatar’s air bridge to support the country.
