Israeli airstrikes on a Gaza tent camp killed at least 21 people, according to the head of a nearby hospital. The strikes, which occurred in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis city, also set off fires and injured at least 28 people.
The Israeli military claimed it targeted senior Hamas militants involved in terrorist activities, but provided no further details. However, witnesses described the scene as “doomsday” and reported seeing flames, black smoke, and twisted metal tent frames.
The strike was one of several deadly assaults across Gaza on Wednesday, including an attack in central Gaza that killed at least 10 people, including four children. The conflict in Gaza has lasted for nearly 14 months, with Hamas holding dozens of Israeli hostages and the majority of Gaza’s population displaced.
International efforts to broker a ceasefire have intensified, with the Biden administration pushing for a new push. President-elect Donald Trump demanded the release of hostages held by Hamas before his inauguration in January. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations warn that hunger is widespread across Gaza due to restrictions on aid delivery.
At least 44,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The Israeli military claims it has killed over 17,000 militants, but lacks evidence for these claims.
