Israel Strikes Sanaa Airport Amid Gaza Conflict

Israel launched air strikes on Yemen’s main airport in Sanaa, targeting four runway and a Yemenia Airways plane, according to reports from the Houthi-affiliated news outlet Al Masirah TV. The attacks came a day after the Houthi rebels fired two projectiles towards Israel.

The strikes completely destroyed the last of the civilian planes operated by Yemenia Airways at Sanaa International Airport. The airport was used mainly for United Nations flights and one remaining commercial plane after three others were damaged in previous Israeli attacks.

Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that the attacks targeted Houthi “terror targets” and warned any group firing at Israel will face severe consequences. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the attack, saying it was part of a pattern of aggression against Israel.

Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said the attack aimed to pressure his group into backing down on its support for Palestinians in Gaza. The Houthis have repeatedly targeted Israel since the start of the conflict in October 2023 and earlier this month, warned they would impose a blockade on the Israeli port of Haifa if Israel escalated its military offensive.
