Israel launched airstrikes on multiple targets in Yemen on Thursday, including its largest airport, where World Health Organization head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was set to board a flight. The strikes come as the Israeli-Gaza war enters its 15th month, with tensions spilling into neighboring countries.
The conflict began in October last year when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking civilians hostage. In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, launching a ground invasion that displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
A cease-fire deal between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah was reached in November, but it has been fragile. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated, with Israel carrying out airstrikes that have killed over 1,400 people, including the group’s leader Hasan Nasrallah.
The Gaza Strip has been devastated by Israeli military actions, with tens of thousands killed and half the population living in “famine-like conditions”. The US has continued to support Israel despite tensions between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some US politicians.
