A group of Israeli reservist soldiers from the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda battalion was suspended by the military after they were involved in an incident where a CNN crew member was assaulted. The incident, which occurred in the West Bank village of Tayasir, revealed the “settler ideology” motivating some soldiers to act in service of extremist groups.
The IDF condemned the battalion’s actions, saying it did not represent how their soldiers should speak or act. An investigation found that the soldiers believed all Palestinians were terrorists and that the West Bank belonged exclusively to Israel. The battalion will remain in reserve service but undergo a process to strengthen its professional and ethical foundations.
This incident has led to criticism from US officials, including Mike Huckabee, who said reports of violence by Israeli settlers are often misdirected.
