Israel to Consider Alternative Refugee Camps in South Sudan

Israel’s new ground offensive, Operation Gideon’s Chariots, has demolished hundreds of homes, sparking concerns about a potential war crime. As talks with South Sudan progress, Israel plans to send a delegation to assess setting up refugee camps there. The move is seen as an attempt to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza City while sidestepping opposition from Egypt and Jordan.

South Sudan, still recovering from years of instability, could be a more feasible option for accepting Palestinian refugees. With significant pressure from former US President Donald Trump, Israel has explored alternative destinations, including Indonesia, Libya, and Ethiopia. However, these talks have yet to yield results.

The international community’s focus on Gaza is not forgetting the crisis in South Sudan, where famine and instability pose serious threats. The US travel ban on South Sudan also remains a point of contention, with Egypt reportedly lobbying against cooperation with Israel on refugee camps.

As the situation unfolds, it appears that Trump’s administration now favors an Arab-led temporary administration for Gaza once hostilities cease. This development raises questions about Israel’s intentions and whether alternative solutions can effectively address the refugee crisis.
