Israel’s Security Cabinet will meet on Tuesday to discuss next steps in the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The possibility of taking full control of the Palestinian enclave and operating militarily in areas previously off-limits is being considered.
According to a source from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, Israel will “occupy” the Gaza Strip. This decision comes after months of mediated ceasefire talks collapsed this week, despite US envoy Steve Witkoff’s efforts to find a plan to end the war.
Hamas has sparked international pressure on Israel by releasing propaganda videos showing emaciated hostages, including one who was forced to dig his own grave. The EU and other countries have condemned these actions as “inhumanity”.
Israel’s leadership is divided over how to address the issue of 50 hostages, both dead and alive, held in Gaza. Some ministers, such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, want Israel to re-occupy Gaza and rebuild Jewish settlements. However, the military has argued against this plan.
The Israeli military will present alternative plans at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, amid growing concerns about famine in Gaza. The US has assured that it is working on a plan to end the war, but progress seems uncertain.
