Israel to Remain in Southern Lebanon Amid Deadline Lapse

Israel has announced that its forces will remain at five strategic points within Lebanese territory despite a deadline for withdrawal, raising concerns about a fragile truce. The move comes after a November cease-fire ended the deadliest war between the two sides in decades.

The Israeli military and Hezbollah agreed to withdraw from southern Lebanon by the end of January, but the deadline was extended to February 18 following deadly violence at the border. However, Israel says it will remain in five “strategic” points until the Lebanese military fully implements its end of the agreement.

This decision has set the stage for potential renewed violence, with thousands of Lebanese residents still unable to return to occupied towns amid repeated warnings from the Israeli military. The Lebanese government and Hezbollah have expressed concerns about Israel’s intentions, while experts warn that a sustained Israeli presence could strengthen Hezbollah in the long run.

The situation is further complicated by mounting tensions in Lebanon, including violent protests against Hezbollah’s influence and escalations of attacks by the Israeli military. The country’s new leaders are struggling to rein in Hezbollah’s power, while the international community watches with concern.
