A massive wildfire in Israel has sparked a national emergency, with multiple sources alleging terrorism and fear of major damage to the Armored Corps museum in Latrun. The fire, believed to have been set intentionally, broke out on Wednesday in the forests between Eshtaol and Latrun, west of Jerusalem, forcing evacuations and road closures.
The flames spread rapidly through multiple locations across Israel, fanned by high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Security sources confirmed that a terrorist act was likely behind the fires, with several people arrested. The Israeli government has requested assistance from five EU countries to help contain the blaze.
Firefighters deployed 111 crews, 10 water-dropping planes, two helicopters, and specialized vehicles, but their efforts were hindered by the strong winds. The situation remains critical, with winds expected to intensify further.
The fires disrupted national events, including the Latrun Memorial Day ceremony and Jerusalem’s main Independence Day celebration. The Defense Ministry asked Israelis to avoid visiting cemeteries, recommending that people stay at home, minimize physical activity, stay hydrated, and avoid physical exertion.
Leaders expressed hope that the fires would be controlled by tomorrow’s Independence Day celebrations, which could potentially become a celebration of the victory over the terror attack. With Israel having experience dealing with wildfires, officials are working to establish defensive lines to prevent the fire from spreading further.
