A conflict between Israel and Iran has escalated into a regional war, with both sides exchanging airstrikes for days. The Israeli military’s aerial attack on Tehran last week aimed to “roll back” the Iranian threat to Israel’s survival. According to Eylon Levy, a former Israeli government spokesperson, the current campaign may take several weeks.
Levy explained that Iran’s nuclear program is massive and has developed its facilities often underground, including Fordow, which is part of a nuclear weapons programme. Iran began the war with 360 ballistic missile launchers, but Israel has destroyed one-third of them. The death toll from Israeli strikes in Iran stands at at least 220, while 24 people have been killed in Iranian counterstrikes.
As concerns about the conflict growing into a regional war intensify, Iran refuses to negotiate a ceasefire while under attack. Levy believes Tehran is not in a position to dictate terms of negotiations due to Israel’s significant military advancements. The US has urged Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear programme, but Washington denies any complicity in Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic.
