Israeli Hold Aid Worker Detained After Deadly Attack on Colleagues

An aid worker from the Palestine Red Crescent Society, Assad Al-Nsasrah, has been detained by Israeli authorities in connection with a deadly attack that killed 15 humanitarian workers, including himself, in March. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that Nsasrah is being held and said he was “forcibly abducted” while carrying out humanitarian duties.

The ICRC has not been granted access to Nsasrah and has also faced restrictions on visiting Palestinian detainees and prisoners in Israeli jails since October 2023. The Palestine Red Crescent Society demanded the immediate release of Nsasrah, accusing Israeli forces of killing him after he was dispatched to respond to reports of injuries from Israeli airstrikes.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the Israeli military stating that troops opened fire due to a perceived threat following a previous encounter in the area. However, no evidence has been provided on how the six individuals identified as Hamas militants were determined to be such, and the Islamist faction has rejected the accusation.
