Israeli lawmakers have advanced two bills that aim for the formal annexation of the West Bank, despite President Trump’s past opposition. The move comes as US Vice President JD Vance visits Israel to strengthen the Gaza ceasefire brokered by Mr. Trump’s administration.
Far-right ministers in Israel have been pushing for annexation, which is opposed by the current government and international community. The bills were brought forward for further readings in the Knesset after lawmakers voted in favor of examining them.
The proposals include annexing Maale Adumim settlement, home to 40,000 people, and a proposal to annex the entire West Bank. The move has been condemned by Palestinian authorities and Jordan’s foreign ministry, which says it violates international law and undermines the two-state solution.
US Vice President Vance is visiting Israel during a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, with the goal of rebuilding the territory and ensuring Hamas is no longer a threat to Israelis. Vance expressed optimism about the progress made so far but acknowledged the challenges ahead.
