An Israeli woman, Liri Albag, was detained at John F. Kennedy Airport by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Tuesday after they believed she was still a hostage of the terrorist group Hamas.
Albag had been held captive by Hamas in Gaza for 477 days following the October 7, 2023, attacks. Her detention has raised concerns about the ability of foreign governments to rescue their citizens from captivity and the potential for diplomatic fallout between Israel and the US.
The incident occurred as Albag was attempting to travel to the United States on a humanitarian visa. It is not clear what specifically led ICE agents to believe she was still in captivity, but it appears that her previous claim of release may not have been recognized by US authorities.
