Israeli politician Itamar Ben-Gvir interrupted Marwan Barghouti, known as “the Palestinian Mandela”, during a meeting at Ganot prison in southern Israel.
Barghouti, who was arrested by Israel in 2002 on murder charges, has been held in solitary confinement since October 2023. Human rights groups say he was subjected to brutal treatment by guards.
Ben-Gvir denied the claims and said Barghouti is a terrorist responsible for murders during the second intifada. In a video post, Ben-Gvir called for the elimination of those who harm Israelis, sparking outrage from Palestinian supporters.
Barghouti’s son, Arab Barghouti, expressed shock at his father’s condition, saying he had lost weight and looked old. However, he remains defiant in the face of Israeli criticism.
