Israel’s Civil War Erupts Over Supreme Court Ruling

Israel’s internal conflict has escalated as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to comply with a Supreme Court order to refrain from dismissing Shin Bet head Ronen Bar. The move has sparked outrage, with many ministers acknowledging that civil war is now inevitable.

Netanyahu’s actions and words have crossed a red line, challenging the fundamental democratic principle of obedience to the rule of law. He has also initiated a relentless effort to dismantle democracy, advancing the dismissal of the government’s legal advisor and voting on changing the composition of the Judicial Selection Committee.

The consequences will soon reach critical places, including the IDF. Reservists have announced they will no longer report for duty, with some already having been dropped from the list. The government’s approach is uncertain to be maintained as the numbers rise.

Prominent government representatives, such as Prof. Talia Einhorn, have declared that the police and army are no longer under their control. This statement has been made in the context of Bar’s case and his replacement.

The dismissal of Bar was largely based on allegations related to Qatar’s influence operation in the Prime Minister’s Office and a document theft case from the IDF. However, Netanyahu’s claims against Bar are unfounded, particularly regarding negotiations for hostage releases.

The United States’ Special Envoy to the Middle East has stated that Netanyahu is acting against the will of the Israeli public on this issue. The deadlock may lead to intensified fighting in Gaza, and the government’s reluctance to address the situation has raised concerns about how Hamas can be defeated while hostages remain in Gaza.

Israel is facing multiple security challenges simultaneously, including Yemen, Syria, Iran, the West Bank, and Lebanon. The recent rocket fire toward Metula in northern Israel has reignited the northern front, with Hezbollah preferring quiet.

The Israeli government’s actions are taking a destructive path, exploiting fighting to sow division and deepen rifts. This approach brings Israel to the brink of the abyss and gives its enemies victory.
