Israel’s Gaza Ceasefire Holds Amidst Destruction and Uncertainty

A fragile ceasefire continues to hold in Gaza as Palestinians return to their homes, but the situation remains uncertain. Since Monday, over 376,000 Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza, according to the UN’s humanitarian body OCHA.

However, many have found enormous piles of rubble where their homes and neighborhoods once stood. Israeli attacks have destroyed more than 95% of the al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, leaving the facility with only partial services available.

US President Donald Trump has proposed resettleing Palestinians from Gaza permanently in other countries, a move opposed by the Palestinians and Arab states across the region. The proposal has sparked concerns about its feasibility and impact on Palestinian sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have killed one man in the occupied West Bank, while Lebanese residents have been returning to their villages near the border with Israel to find homes in ruins. A recent decision by the Trump administration to rescind sanctions against radical Israeli settlers has raised concerns about the potential for anti-Palestinian violence.

The UN’s humanitarian body OCHA and France’s government have reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, amidst an Israeli ban on the organization set to come into effect.
