Israel’s Gaza War Future Hangs in Balance

Israel is set to hold a crucial meeting on Sunday evening to discuss the future of the war in Gaza. Senior security officials, coalition party leaders, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will attend. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir is expected to present operational updates, stating that Israeli forces are nearing control over 75% of the Gaza Strip.

However, not all government officials agree with this assessment. Some have criticized the army’s assessment, arguing that Hamas still holds significant capabilities and control within the strip. The government has approved the return of residents to communities near Gaza, which were evacuated after a recent Hamas-led massacre. But critics say this decision may be premature.

The meeting comes as the government faces a critical juncture in determining the course of the war. Discussions will focus on a potential deal under the “Witkoff framework,” which would allow for partial hostage releases and a return to combat operations. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is expected to voice opposition to continued humanitarian aid into Gaza, arguing it undermines Israel’s war aims.

Sources close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasize that he has not abandoned the war’s objectives, but rather seeks a deal under which he can secure hostages’ releases while pausing combat operations. However, some ministers are concerned that a temporary agreement could become permanent due to mounting US diplomatic pressure.
