Israel’s military raid on the northern West Bank city of Jenin has entered its second month, forcing thousands to flee their homes amidst widespread destruction and arrests. The Israeli army has deployed hundreds of soldiers and bulldozers that have demolished houses and torn up vital infrastructure in the overcrowded refugee camp, leaving almost all residents out.
The operation, which began on January 21, has resulted in at least 26 Palestinian deaths and mass displacement of people across the West Bank. According to the Palestinian Authority, about 17,000 people have been forced out of Jenin refugee camp, while another 10,000 left from Tulkarem camp.
Humanitarian officials say this is the largest displacement operation in decades, with Israeli forces cutting off water and power, demolishing dozens of houses, and tearing up large stretches of roadway. The situation has become “uninhabitable” for many, with the camps becoming increasingly deserted.
The raids have also led to arrests of Palestinians across the West Bank, including four people detained from Jenin on Wednesday, including two children. An elderly woman was shot in the chest near the entrance to the Jenin refugee camp. Israeli forces have sealed the entrances of the camp and are shooting at people who try to approach it.
The displaced residents face uncertain futures, with many trapped without access to basic necessities like food and water. The international community has expressed concern over the situation, with UN officials describing it as “unprecedented” and highlighting the need for humanitarian assistance.
