A man died after being sucked into an Airbus A319 jet engine at Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport in Italy on Tuesday, according to local reports. Authorities suspect the incident may have been a suicide. The 46-year-old man evaded security checks and ran towards taxiing aircraft before being killed by the spinning blades.
Flights were grounded for almost two hours as the airport confirmed a “problem on the taxiway.” The incident occurred after boarding was completed and the plane was preparing to depart for Asturias, Spain. Volotea, the budget airline operating the flight, posted a statement saying they are investigating the incident.
The airport, one of Italy’s busiest, has suspended traffic due to the incident. Local authorities are still investigating the cause and circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
