Italian Cave Rescue Closes Uncharted Passage After 4-Day Effort

Rescue teams finally cleared a difficult passage in Italy’s Bueno Fonteno cave, completing their four-day operation to extract an injured spelunker. The rescue of Ottavia Piana, 32, who fell five meters while exploring the uncharted cave on Saturday, is now complete.

Piana suffered multiple fractures, including those to her face, ribs, and knee. Doctors have been monitoring her condition throughout the rescue effort. Over 120 technicians worked around the clock to assist in the rescue operation, which was led by authorities who were alerted to Piana’s situation on Saturday evening.

The successful completion of the passage clearing marks a significant milestone in the rescue effort, allowing rescuers to enter the main tunnel and exit the uncharted part of the cave. The operation is expected to continue for at least another day and a half.
