Italian Journalist Held in Iran’s Evin Prison

An Italian journalist, Cecilia Sala, 29, was arrested and detained in Iran’s notorious Evin prison after reporting on the country’s turmoil for days. Sala, a prominent foreign correspondent, had published reports since Dec. 13, describing the changes in Iran under new leadership and the growing “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. Her arrest, confirmed by Italy’s foreign ministry, has raised concerns about the treatment of journalists in Iran. Sala was supposed to board her flight back to Italy on Dec. 20 but did not show up at Tehran’s airport. The Italian government is negotiating for her release, following a pattern of detaining Iranian reporters and journalists, including foreigners and dual nationals.
