Italian Police Bloodhound Bruno Killed Over Nailed Dog Food

A 7-year-old police bloodhound named Bruno was found dead in his shed in southern Italy on Friday morning. Bruno, who helped find nine people during his career as a sniffer-dog, had been fed bits of dog food laced with nails before his death. His trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, suspects that Bruno’s killers were targeting him and has given the police the names of two people he believes were involved.

Caressa, who was photographed with Bruno after one of his heroic rescues, expressed outrage over Bruno’s slaughter on social media. He stated that Bruno had done more civic good in Italy than most citizens and received death threats for his work rescuing dogs from illegal dogfights.

The death has sparked a criminal investigation and led to a call for harsher penalties under a new animal protection law that Caressa helped push through. The law carries up to four years in prison and a 60,000-euro fine, but Feltri believes the penalty should be greater considering Bruno’s heroic actions.

Bruno’s legacy is being remembered as he was praised by Premier Giorgia Meloni for his “civic good” and lawmakers are vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
