Italy Summons Envoy Over EU Leader Remarks on Ukraine

Italy has summoned its ambassador in Paris over comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who reportedly called French President Emmanuel Macron a “warmonger” and criticized his support for sending soldiers to Ukraine. The French government has asked the Italian envoy to clarify the deputy prime minister’s statements, which they deemed unacceptable.

Salvini had urged Macron to “stick to the tram” and go to Ukraine instead of sending troops. He also expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s policy on Ukraine. French officials have accused Salvini’s comments as derogatory and counterproductive to the alliance.

The relationship between Italy and France has been strained in recent years, with both leaders holding strong nationalist views. Macron has previously described Salvini as a “hypocrite” and a “chatterbox.” This latest incident highlights tensions between the two EU leaders over their differing views on Ukraine policy.
