Italy is holding five abrogative referenda on labour and citizenship issues, with citizens required to participate to have them valid. The referenda aim to address concerns about the labour market reform, migrant reception, and integration policies.
The first four questions focus on job protection, short-term contracts, and employees’ safety, while the fifth question reduces the time necessary for Italian citizenship from 10 to 5 years.
Government parties oppose the referendas, urging citizens not to participate. However, analysts see this as a test for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s executive. The turnout so far is low, with only around 7% of eligible voters casting their ballots, raising concerns about reaching the quorum required for the referenda to be valid.
The International Democracy Community describes these referenda as a “citizens’ initiative,” launched by advocacy groups and trade unions without parliamentary support. Voting will take place from Sunday to Monday, with polling hours set between 7am and 15pm on Monday. The outcome of these referenda will determine the future of Italy’s labour laws and citizenship policies.
