Italy summoned its ambassador to France after Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini made mocking remarks about French President Emmanuel Macron’s suggestion to deploy European troops to Ukraine. The remarks came during a press conference in Milan, where Salvini used a local dialect phrase that translates to “get lost.” He told reporters, “You go there if you want. Put your helmet on, your jacket, your rifle and you go to Ukraine.”
Salvini has repeatedly criticized Macron over Ukraine, with tensions between the two countries escalating further. French President Macron is a vocal supporter of Ukraine in its war with Russia and has been working with other world leaders to mobilize support for Ukraine.
The incident marks the latest in a series of diplomatic clashes between Paris and Rome since Giorgia Meloni took power in 2022. France had previously summoned Italy’s ambassador over recent tensions, highlighting strong convergences between the two countries on issues like unwavering support for Ukraine.
