Rob McElhenney has teased that the upcoming crossover between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary may “surprise quite a few people.” The crossover, which will feature the stars of both shows including Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, Danny DeVito, Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and William Stanford Davis, will be a unique blend of storytelling.
According to McElhenney, the look and tone of each episode will be different yet still maintain a narrative connection. The Abbott Elementary team, consisting of Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, has shared that their Paddy’s chapter is “very cool” and was written and shot specifically for this crossover. The ideal viewing experience will be watching both episodes back-to-back on Hulu.
Schumacker revealed that Frank (DeVito) and Mr. Johnson (Davis) have a backstory dating back to high school, which unfortunately didn’t make the cut due to time constraints. McElhenney also shared an ad-libbed joke that couldn’t fit into the Abbott Elementary tone. The crossover episodes will provide insight into what happens between the scenes not shown in each individual episode.
Howerton’s character, Dennis, is heavy in the upcoming crossover, despite only being available for half a day due to his commitment to another show, Sirens.
