Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy made his highly anticipated return from injury on Saturday, leading the team to a 20-10 victory over the Houston Texans. After 364 days away from competition, McCarthy played 13 plays and completed four of seven attempts for 30 yards.
The quarterback expressed his emotions during the national anthem, saying it was “impossible” to think of his return as just another day of summer football. He felt a sense of journey and dedication, which fueled his passion for the game. McCarthy also showed flashes of skill, including an 18-yard completion to wide receiver Jordan Addison on an out-cut.
Coach Kevin O’Connell praised McCarthy’s composure and poise in leading the offense, saying he was looking for exactly what he saw from his quarterback. However, McCarthy still had some areas for improvement, such as a high pass to Lucky Jackson and a missed timing with the same receiver.
The Vikings will have two joint practices with the New England Patriots this week, which may replace preseason action for most starters, including McCarthy. O’Connell said McCarthy’s performance felt “clean” overall but noted that it won’t be perfect every time.
With his return from injury, McCarthy is one step closer to being ready for the team’s regular-season opener on September 8 against the Chicago Bears.
