Jack Black Returns as SNL Host with Musical Guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile

Jack Black returned to Saturday Night Live (SNL) for the first time in 20 years, bringing his signature energy to the show. His musical guests included Elton John, who also returned to the show after a gap of 39 years.

In the cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump impression stole the show with a speech about tariffs, joined by Andrew Dismukes as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Mike Myers as Elon Musk.

The monologue was a highlight, featuring Black singing about his return to the show, complete with a musical performance with cast member Kenan Thompson. This marked a welcome change from previous times when Black hosted the show.

Other sketches included Indiana Jones, where Dismukes shone as an irked host on a blind dating show; Flamin’ Hot Commercial, which poked fun at the spicy snack’s infamous status; and One Uppers, a funny sketch about college friends trying to one-up each other.

The musical performances by Elton John and Brandi Carlile were impressive, particularly during their rendition of “Little Richard’s Bible.” The show’s Weekend Update segment featured an excellent performance from Ego Nwodim as the White House Correspondents Dinner comedian.

Other notable sketches included Making Love, which featured Jack Black and Sarah Sherman in a silly musical number; Bass Lake, a jam session sketch that played to Black’s strengths; Time Square Kiss, a funny take on WWII-era kissing; and The Great Battle, an animated short that was worth watching despite being cut for time.
