Jack Daniel’s CEO Slams Canadian Response to US Tariffs

Canada’s response to US tariffs has been criticized by the CEO of Brown-Forman, the parent company of Jack Daniel’s. Lawson Whiting described Canada’s move to pull US-made alcohol from store shelves as “worse than a tariff,” stating it’s taking sales away and is an “unproportionate” response.

Canada imposed a 25% levy on all US exports in response to Donald Trump’s tariffs, which has led some Canadian provinces to instruct retailers to remove US-made products. The move affects the liquor industry, with Ontario’s Liquor Control Board of Ontario reporting annual sales of $965 million from US alcohol products.

Whiting said Brown-Forman, which generates around 1% of its sales from Canada, will monitor the situation and see how it plays out. The company reported a 3% decline in net sales and a 6% decrease in net income for the quarter that ended January 31.
