Jackie Chan expressed his concerns about the big Hollywood studios’ focus on making money during a Q&A session in Locarno, where he was awarded the Pardo alla Carriera award for career achievement.
Chan believes that many studios have shifted their priority from creating quality films to recouping investments. “Right now, they’re not filmmakers, they’re business guys,” he said. “They invest 40 million and think, ‘How can I get it back?’ And you can’t go over.”
The veteran Hong Kong actor emphasized his dedication to cinema craft, highlighting the importance of learning every role on a film’s set. He joked that in Asian cinema, only two directors have mastered all these skills: himself and Sammo Hung.
Chan also shared his own experience of switching from stunt performance to acting and singing to ensure longevity in his career. He said, “I wanna be the Asian Robert De Niro.” His breakthrough film Rush Hour was a turning point, which he credits with changing the culture of Hollywood films.
Chan’s comments highlight the challenges faced by filmmakers in today’s industry, where financial concerns often take precedence over artistic merit. The actor’s dedication to his craft and passion for bridging cultural gaps between Asia and America remain an inspiration to fans worldwide.
