Jahmyr Gibbs to Take Bigger Role with David Montgomery Out

The Detroit Lions will continue to utilize Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield despite David Montgomery’s knee injury, which is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the regular season. Running backs coach Scottie Montgomery emphasized that while Gibbs’ workload may increase, he does not want to overwork him, especially with three games left in the schedule.

Gibbs played 59 snaps last week and will likely take on a larger role this week against the Chicago Bears. However, coach Scottie Montgomery is focused on limiting Gibbs’ reps rather than his touches. “He doesn’t need a lot of touches in some situations to get big yardage,” Montgomery said.

The goal is to maintain Gibbs’ freshness for the playoffs, where the Lions are aiming to make a deep run. Coach Scottie Montgomery aims to limit Gibbs’ snaps to around 40 per game, rather than 60, and supplement his workload with other players like Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki.
