Jake Dickert, the head coach of Washington State University, is set to become the new leader of Wake Forest Demon Deacons after Dave Clawson’s sudden resignation on Monday. The 23-20 record under Dickert will be his third full season with the school.
Dickert took over as head coach at Washington State in 2021, replacing Nick Rolovich, and led the Cougars to two winning seasons, including an 8-4 record in 2024. Despite a tough end to the season, losing three straight games after an impressive 8-1 start, Dickert’s team was one of the most entertaining teams in college football.
Quarterback John Mateer’s decision to enter the transfer portal, citing the departure of Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma, may indicate challenges ahead for the Cougars. Meanwhile, Wake Forest, which finished the 2024 season with a 4-8 record, will look to rebuild under Dickert’s leadership.
In his 11 seasons at Bowling Green, Clawson compiled a 67-69 record and made seven bowl appearances. The Demon Deacons had previously experienced success in 2021 but struggled in recent years, going 4-8 in both 2023 and 2024.
