The 35th annual James Beard Restaurant and Chef Gala took place at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, showcasing a diverse range of chefs, restaurateurs, and industry leaders. The event focused on the political moment, with many nominees speaking out against ICE raids and immigration policies.
James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach highlighted the industry’s reliance on immigrant communities, which she credited for providing the underpinning of the restaurant industry. “We get to taste the world because of them,” she said. Other presenters, including Governor JB Pritzker, used their remarks to celebrate diversity and unity.
This year’s winners reflected their own experiences as immigrants in the culinary world. Arjav Ezekiel, a winner for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, spoke about finding a job in the restaurant industry despite being an undocumented immigrant. Best Chef: Great Lakes winner Noah Sandoval sent a message focusing on his mental health and immigration concerns.
Despite the somber tone, the gala’s atmosphere was lively, with attendees dressed in vibrant attire. The afterparty at Union Station featured cocktails, cake, pulled pork sandwiches, and music from various performers. Many winners used their moments to reflect on their own experiences as immigrants, adding a personal touch to an event that often focused on culinary achievements.
The James Beard Awards have long been seen as the “Oscars of food,” but this year’s ceremony took a different approach, highlighting the intersection of politics and culture in the industry.
