James Cameron has assured fans that production on the highly anticipated sequel, Pandora 3, is “well ahead of the curve.” Speaking ahead of its planned December 19 release date, the Oscar-winning director said the post-production process, which began in late 2023, is progressing smoothly. He noted that this time around, the team has doubled the number of shots finished at this stage compared to the previous film, and the overall length of the movie is expected to be comparable.
Cameron emphasized that the experience has become less hectic over time, with the team becoming more adept at handling the complexities of the project. He promised “really clever action set-pieces” that will excite audiences and a new level of character development and intrigue that fans have not seen before in the series.
Although details remain scarce, Cameron teased the introduction of two new Na’vi tribes and a focus on fire in the upcoming film, with stars Sam Worthington and Zoe SaldaƱa expected to reprise their roles. The director also hinted at Michelle Yeoh’s return for Avatar 4, but not beyond that installment.
The highly anticipated sequel is part of the enduringly successful Avatar franchise, which has grossed over $5 billion worldwide, making it the most successful original film series without a pre-existing IP. With its massive audience and loyal fan base, the franchise is likely to continue breaking box office records in the coming years.
