James Gunn has confirmed that DCU films “The Batman” and its spin-off series “The Penguin” will remain separate from the larger DC Universe. In an interview with Gizmodo, Gunn stated that any characters or stories introduced in these projects would be considered “Elseworlds” content.
Matt Reeves, director of “The Batman,” has also addressed his plans for the sequel. Speaking to Digital Spy, Reeves discussed how the next installment will explore more gray areas and complexities within Gotham City, making it challenging for Batman to operate.
Reeves mentioned that the story will begin after the events of “The Penguin” and will take place during the winter season in Gotham. While details about villains are scarce, Barry Keoghan’s Joker has been confirmed as a part of the film, although Gunn has expressed skepticism about an HBO Joker series.
The DCU has opted to steer clear of supernatural elements, ruling out characters like Clayface but adapting The Riddler and Penguin into more grounded storylines. Other possibilities, such as Mr. Freeze or Black Mask, remain speculative for now.
