Actor Jamie Foxx has revealed that he suffered a stroke in April 2023 due to a brain bleed, a growing concern among middle-aged Americans. Foxx shared his experience in his new Netflix stand-up special, “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…”, detailing the medical emergency and grueling rehabilitation process.
Foxx developed a severe headache on April 11, 2023, which worsened to life-threatening proportions before he was taken to the hospital. His sister’s instincts led her to drive him to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain bleed causing the stroke.
The rare case remains under investigation, as Foxx’s doctor couldn’t locate the source of the bleeding. However, Foxx credits his sister with saving his life and notes that he made a remarkable recovery.
Brain bleeds are a type of hemorrhagic stroke, which occur when blood vessels break and begin bleeding into the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 795,000 people experience strokes in the US each year, with about 13% being hemorrhagic strokes.
Stroke risks increase with age, but Foxx’s case highlights a growing trend of middle-aged Americans experiencing brain bleeds. The condition is particularly prevalent among Black Americans, who face nearly double the risk of stroke compared to their white counterparts.
High blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol are leading risk factors for stroke. Foxx’s sister saved his life after recognizing the early signs of a medical emergency – sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, confusion, trouble speaking, or severe headache with no known cause.
Acting fast is crucial in improving survival rates and recovery from stroke. By being aware of these signs and taking proactive steps to manage risk factors, individuals can dramatically lower their chances of experiencing a stroke.
