Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1 tennis player, is gearing up for his Wimbledon quarter-final against American Ben Shelton despite a lingering elbow injury. On Tuesday, Sinner practiced indoors on hard courts to maintain his fitness ahead of the match.
Coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill led the practice session, which lasted around 20-30 minutes. Cahill later revealed that the MRI results for Sinner’s injured elbow are still pending, but he did not want to take a day off. The coach described the practice as beneficial, as it allowed Sinner to maintain his timing on hard courts.
Sinner suffered an injury in Monday’s match against Grigor Dimitrov when he slipped on the grass and landed awkwardly on his elbow. The fall caused him significant discomfort and reduced his average speed by around six miles per hour. Cahill praised Dimitrov for playing well despite Sinner’s injuries, saying that what happened was “a travesty.”
Sinner will remain world No. 1 in the ATP rankings regardless of who wins Wimbledon. He is aiming to reach the final for the first time at the All England Club and has a strong chance of facing Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals and final, respectively. With a 23-3 match record on the season, Sinner is well-positioned to make his mark at Wimbledon.
