Japan and South Korea Sizzle Through Summer

Heatwaves continue to grip Japan and South Korea as both countries set new temperature records in June and July. In Japan, the city of Tamba broke its national record with a scorching 41.2C, while local temperatures soared above 35C at almost a third of the country’s weather stations.

The heat is not unique to these countries, however. South Korea experienced an unprecedented 22 consecutive “tropical nights” in Seoul, with temperatures failing to fall below 25C for 22 days straight.

But relief may be on the horizon. Temperatures are expected to drop back to average by the weekend. However, long-term forecast models suggest a continued trend above average throughout August and into September.

The recent heatwaves have set a new benchmark for Japan’s warmest summers, with 2023 and 2024 being jointly the warmest on record. South Korea’s 2024 summer was also one of its warmest years overall.

Meanwhile, in eastern Australia, unusual weather patterns brought heavy rain and snow to parts of New South Wales and Queensland. While significant disruption occurred, many people flocked to affected areas to experience a rare winter wonderland. Snowfall totals reached up to 40cm in some regions, with some individuals experiencing snow for the first time in their lives.
