Japan Apologizes to Wrongly Accused Man’s Family Over 2020 Arrests

A group of senior police officials from Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department, the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office, and the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office apologized to the family of Shizuo Aishima, a former adviser who died while in detention for allegedly exporting equipment with potential military applications. The officials visited Aishima’s grave on August 25, acknowledging that their investigation was unlawful and caused immense distress to the bereaved family. Aishima’s eldest son expressed relief but requested a reinvestigation and reconsideration of disciplinary measures against those involved in his case. The apologies come after previous reviews concluded that there were major errors in the investigation, including unlawful arrests and opposition to bail requests.
